Know Your Bets
There are two main varieties of roulette bet; risky but potentially lucrative inside bets and safer outside bets that offer up lower returns. You need to get your head around these different types of bets to become proficient at roulette betting.
So called because these bets are placed on the inside of the roulette table on individual numbers and small groupings. Because of this, inside bets are risky. Betting on a single number or a small group of numbers has far less favourable odds than betting on larger section of the roulette wheel.
A straight up roulette bet is when you only place your chips on one number; this is the riskiest betting decision on the table, but yields the best pay-out: a whopping 35 to 1.
This is where you bet on the line in between two numbers, meaning you’re betting on two pockets. The odds of winning with a split bet are 17 to 1.
Noticing a pattern here? A street bet refers to betting on any three numbers in a horizontal line (so 1, 2 and 3 or 4, 5 and 6 etc.). The odds of a successful street roulette bet are 11 to 1.
Rather than placing a bet on the corner of the table; corner betting has players placing a chip on the corner of four adjoining squares. In effect, you bet on four numbers simultaneously. The odds of winning a corner roulette bet are 8 to 1.
This is similar to a street bet, except you’re betting on two horizontal lines rather than just the one. This means you’ll be betting on six numbers at odds of 5 to 1. These two lines must be placed next to each other on the table.
Outside bets are are positioned around inside bets on the ‘outside’ of the table. There is usually a symbol or word associated with outside bets. Outside betting is low-risk, but outside bets also have a lower pay-out than inside bets. As a result, a lot of strategies use outside bets to help players generate a safe and steady flow of winnings. All outside bets are a predetermined set of numbers which can’t be changed.
This is where you bet on a predetermined set of twelve numbers (1-12, 13-24 or 25-36). Betting roulette on this large group of numbers offers favourable odds of 2 to 1.
A column bet is very similar to a dozen bet, except rather than betting on numbers grouped horizontally, you bet on one of the three vertical columns running down the table. The odds of a successful column bet are also 2 to 1.
Also known as ‘Black/Red Bet’, this is when players bet on either red numbers or black numbers. This is a popular betting strategy due simplicity, however the odds of 1 to 1 mean the lowest possible pound-for-pound return.
Similar to the colours bet, however instead of betting on the colour of the number, you’ll bet whether the number falls between 1-18 or 19-36. The odds of a successful High/Low bet stand at 1 to 1.
This betting system should be fairly self-explanatory. You bet on whether the number that appears will be odd or even. The odds of betting in this fashion are also 1 to 1.
